Our starting point was a Zolatone 20 series paint, purchased from Autobody Toolmart. We selected it because it provides a multi-colored finish with great wear characteristics. The Zolatone spec sheet stated that we should apply a primer, but nowhere could we find any more information. When we called Zolatone, they told us to use any primer compatible with a water-based paint.

We called KOI, a supplier of automotive paints. They suggested the Omni primer. Pictured on the left is our white Omni primer and its catalyst.

Another complication is that the Zolatone requires a paint gun with a larger (2 - 2.4 mm) tip. The larger opening allows the little microballons of color to pass through and 'splat' on the painted surface. Fortunately, KOI carried an inexpensive paint gun that worked for us.

Zolatone is an interesting paint. Although it's 'water based', it isn't just water cleanup. First you rinse the paint tools with water, then finish the cleanup with solvent.
