We are using the "installed hinge" method for securing the cowling to the wing. Several Velocity builders have done this, so we are not blazing new trails.
Although it will take more time, we have several reasons. The first is the ease of installing and removing the cowling without having deal with 36 screws and washers. As a result, we will have no chance of a cowling screw working its way out and striking the prop. The final reason is cosmetic: We won't experience chipped paint at the screw holes, and we like the look of the screw-less cowling. After all, the Velocity is a beautiful bird.
Here we're cutting a hinge for the top wing/cowling section. With the wings blocking most of the power tools, we actually resorted to using a hand saw for the cut. |
