The hinge has been undercut to more closely follow the wing surface. The hinge pin can be removed pretty smoothly with the hinge clamped into position.

Following Andy Millin's example, we have a 20" hinge installed starting 8" from the firewall. His cowling has been reasonable to remove, so it looks like a recipe for success to us!
