The adhesive for the carbon hinges is installed in its dispenser, and next to it is a mixing tip. The storage cap from the adhesive twists off, then the mixing tip twists on. The mixing tip is pretty amazing: this crazy convoluted series of inner surfaces allow the adhesive to be delivered - premixed - to the bonding surface.
The mixing tips are designed to be disposable, but we have realized the following: After we've dispensed most of the adhesive we need, we can recover the adhesive in the mixing tip, and then clean the tip. With the compressor, we blow the contents of the mixing tip into a small mixing cup. We hand mix the ejected adhesive, using it on the hinge. We then run acetone through the cleared mixing tip, and it is clean for re-use. We're sure that it's as cost effective to just buy more adhesive and mixing tips, but it is somehow satisfying to make everything go as far as possible.
When we dowloaded the technical data sheet for the adhesive, we discovered that it wants to be stored in a cool area (between 8 and 21 degrees Celsius, or 46 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit). We're keeping ours in the basement. |
